external fuel pump

Before my 383 goes in I want to install an aftermarket enternal fuel pump, havent decided which one yet. My question is can I run a good aftermarket external pump while keeping the stock in-tank pump, and if the stock in-tank pump fails will the external be OK, will the car still run? I'm trying to avoid pulling the tank, but if I have to I will - since it would be the last time, thats the reason for going external. I know some of you guys must be running externals, so what did you do about the stock in-tank pump? Thanks for your help
