Engine is dieseling, rough spot @ 1000 RPM, HELP!!
I washed my car 2 weeks ago and that is when this all started happening.
When I go to shut my car down, it will continue to run (diesel) but not like it idles, just a ough sputter, then it either stops without complaint or it stops and there is the sound of evaporating water... It also has a rough spot at 1000 RPM and slightly rough at 1900 RPM... I have ruled out the distributer and am half way through changing the spark plugs (the four in the back are a real pain) I am not sure where to go from here... Is it my timing? Is it the ocane in my fuel (87) Should I find some seriously messed up spark plugs?
I really need some help here... I've tried 2 times before and gotten no help at all...

"It sounds like a boat"
Special Features:
Non-functioning parking break
Non-functioning rear hatch pistons
Broken heater ****
Disconnected engine computer that continually says check engine
Future plans:
New Paint - take out two small rust holes
Reupholster the ceiling (bare foam now)
Highflow Cat-back exhaust
Single 12" Subwoofer... don't need to break windows

Hmmn, if this just started after you washed the car, I take it you had the hood up and washed the engine/bay as well?
If so, could be entirely possible you knocked a vacuum line off, check around the cruise control, etc, make sure all lines are intact and no tees have been cracked.
Does the engine idle higher than it used to? That would lead me to believe you have a vacuum leak.
The "phhsssh" sound at the end of the run on, is air coming back through the intake, and usually happens when an engine deisels.
If you can't find any vacuum leaks, try advancing the timing a few degrees, but keep an ear open for pinging when driven under a load.

I actually had the hood down, but I noted that a large amount of water was going down the hood scoop... I have been searching for vacuum leaks but most of the tubes apear to be in excellent condition... the idle is higher than it used to be so I still am suspicious of vacuum leakage... I just found that one of my spark plug wires looks defective, so this might be why it runs rough and the ignition "pops" under load...
