Were to Begin?

I got a 1991 z28 about a month ago and since this is my first thirdgen I’m really not sure where to begin with getting it back in top notch condition.

It was parked in an old barn for about the last 6 years (it looked like some just pulled it in one day and shut the door). The only thing I’ve done to it so far is replace the battery, starter motor and put on new tires. It passed inspection on the first try (I was surprised).

History about the car:

It’s had three owners before me; I have the original sales invoice from where it was purchased in Darlington, SC in 1990.

After looking around this site, I now know to get the RPO codes from inside the center console and here are the ones that I think are the most important: LB9, MD8, F42, GU2, G80, and J41. I’m not sure what code 1SC “OPTION PACKAGE 03” is for but it’s there as well.

Problems that I know about or can see that need to get fixed are; faded paint on hood and nose, a few dings on quarter panels, hatch closure is broken, and a few other cosmetic things that I think I can fix myself or get fixed easily somewhere in town.

Now things that I noticed and don’t have a clue about how to fix are:

Oil gauge is pegged above 60. I’m looking into that now to see what’s going on.

Both cooling fan’s are always on.

A rattle in the front suspension when I hit a bump. (metallic sounding, like dropping a foot long chain on a bench).

The car drives great, it’s a little sluggish on take off’s but other than that to solid.

Anyway, if you have any suggestions about were to start I would greatly appreciate it.

About the sound in the front end, you say it passed a certification, so I bet its a sway bar end link, a $6 part. You can fix this yourself. Also do yourself a favor and do both left and right at the same time. Its amazing how much of a difference this part can make. At the following link, go to "how to's" on the left menu, then "Replacing Sawy Bar end Links". He says you can do it without removing the tire but remove the wheel, its 10x easier. Also if you have a grinder just grind em off, most of the time the nuts are rusted to sh*t. http://iroczone.com/newindex.htm Still suprising the mechanic didn't spot this, but oh well. Due a complete tune up, if you can afford it put some good quality parts on there. If that doesn't fix the hesitation, try some injector cleaner.
