Post a pic of it ?
If its metal and has a slit in it , it might be a sleeve thats used to hold the bolt in place under the alternator.

I think it is the lock washer that holds the nut down that holds the return wire from the battery to the alternator.

Not as long as the screw deosn't get loose

I would also say it' a lock washer, but the word "cylinder" throws me.

i would take a picture of it if it wasnt laying on the highway some where... hard to explain... on the back oif thealternator there is like a hole.. it goes in there, it looks liek ther is a screw and lub. so i think it was like a dust catcher or kepper outer.. but the guy at autpzone said sinceit was new i dont need to worrie cux of warrenty. and he said that that wasnt causing the whistle

Maybe a bad bearing in the alternator? I know when the bearings went in my Power Stearing pump it sounded like i had a small supercharger under the hood it would whine when i reved it up. I thought it was cool until the pump died on a curvey road.

I also have a whine. I went over the whole engine with a stethoscope. It is the loudest by the throttle body. Car runs perfect, I don't know what it could be. Ive had some people that heard it tell me it is just the air being sucked in from the intake.

Heres what mine sounds like.

My whine is from the alternator (new) with key on/engine off.

Last year I installed a Powermaster 140amp altenator to replace the big bad 70amp altenator that was originally in my car. After installing it I got that same whistle/supercharger whine. My cars power system sits at about 14.2V with no problems. Do you notice a voltage drop after a long drive?

Yes.

if the car sits for a couple of day(some times more) the volts is =>14 while charging.

look at the back of it and see if you can see inside it.. hard to expain. its where the pullt and stuff turns... if that cap in the back comes off you can get those noises;..... turn out that was mine... it fell off and it was grinding of the internals
