Edelbrock air gap/hood clearance

I'm sure this question has probably been asked to death but...I have a custom built 383 in my 1984 Z28 with a stock hood and stock dual snorkel air cleaner set up. Can an Edelbrock air-gap fit under the 1984 stock hood? I'm struggling with staying with the stock hood or going with something with more clearance. I prefer the stock hood, but fear my Edelbrock Perfomer manifold is choking the engine.

Sorry if this is beating a dead horse, but I've been involved in another project for a while and have been away from this board.

Thanks.

I don't think so. You'll be about 1½" short with that combo.

However, a somewhat decent intake that does fit (just barely!), that you can pick up fairly cheap on ebay and/or the classifieds on this site, is the ZZ4 one. That's what I'm running at the moment, with the original air cleaner for my 83 L69 car. FIts and works great.

Will the ZZ4 manifold support a 420HP 383? That's the issue. The head/cam combo is estimated to produce 420HP, but I don't think the Edelbrock Performer is helping me reach those numbers. If not the ZZ4 manifold, any other suggestions? Will the Weiand Stealth do it? Would it fit any better? It appears that the Stealth is taller in the front but shorter in the rear.

Thanks again.

Well a ZZ4 does 345 HP out of the box; so I'd suspect it would; or at least come REAL close.

There's NO WAY those 2 intakes are only ¼" apart. I had 3 intakes - a Performer, a ZZ4, and a Perf RPM - sitting on my garage floor; the ZZ4 is about ¾" taller than the Perf, and the Perf RPM is about 1" taller than that; and the Air Gap is about ½" taller than the std Perf RPM according to its specs and a visual at the store (I don't have one of those to compare).

Sorry, my bad, I was referring to the RPM air-gap but failed to mention that small detail. I also failed to mention that I am not running the stock carb. I'm using an Edelbrock Performer square bore carb.

By my calculations, the pad height on the RPM air-gap is 4.725". The pad height on a Weiand Stealth is 4.34" Would that work?

Maybe I just need to get some clay, set several blobs on top of the cleaner and close the hood to see how much I've got to play with.

You're correct. I was looking at the specs for the Performer vs the air gap performer. I've edited my previous post to retract that statement. The RPM air gap is very tall at 4.725" at the pad. I think the Stealth might work ar 4.34" which is just 0.29" taller than the Performer. Any comments on the Stealth? I had heard good things about it. Would the ZZ4 be better?
