Educate me about ignition components so I can troubleshoot my problem
Help educate me here,
pickup coil is in the distributor,
the ignition coil is located to the left of the intake right behind the EGR,
...and the module is what?
Do our cars have an ignition control unit?
When we talk about the MSD-6a what is that, a module? is it an add on, or a replacement? (IE do our cars have something that does the same thing? or is it a complete add-on?)
Is there anything else I need to know about?
As for the ignition problem...
I don't have access to a multimeter, therefore I'm going to ask for your professional opinion.
I have a slight hesitation at part throttle if I let the engine cool a great deal (IE overnight). The spark plugs are fouled (soft carbon-y, Chiltons says to check air cleaner (good) and ingition components)... I also notice that there is a definate miss at idle (or at least it's not smooth) ...it's not regular...
Plugs are gapped to .44 and are Bosch Platinums
Here is what I've done so far:
1) I moved spark plug wires around, made them neat, put them in clips and just generally jerked them around.
2) Took the coil wire off at the coil and took some very fine emory cloth and cleaned it up, while at the coil I also unplugged the connectors from it and plugged them back in (to sorta renew the connections to make sure there was good contact).
That made a difference... I can now definatly feel my tranny mount bump when it shifts into second, although the second run it didn't bump or pull as hard, I have a feeling that the car will be the same as before tomorrow morning (I'll keep you posted)
So what do you think it is? pickup coil? ignition coil? module?
I'd really appreciate any and all help. As always, thanks.
