Buick Crate 3.1 question
Hey,
I figured this was the forum I could get info about this on. Here's the story.
I have been shopping around for another V6 since I wrecked my other one and I stumbled upon a guy that had a V6 firebird with a Crate 3.1 Engine with 5K miles in it. I want to know how I can tell he replaced the motor or where I could look on the block to see if it is really a crate. It feels like it has more horsepower then my old V6 motor that has 120K on it but I just want to make sure.
Thanks in advance.
By the way the car is a steal at 1300.

it MIGHT have it, I have never used it to get 6 cylinder block numbers before, so I'm not sure. But wouldnt hurt to look.

Well I don't know how "Buick" comes into play here, but......
'82 to '89 V6 thirdgen cars used the 2.8 liter engine in either carburetted ('82-'84) or Muti port injected ('85-'90) versions. From '90-'92, they used the 3.1, which is the same bore with a longer stroke, a bit more torque.
GM makes a crate replacement in a 3.4 liter, it will bolt right in where ever a 2.8 or 3.1 was using the intake, ignition, injectors etc. from the old engine.
It is possible they made a service replacement 3.1 back when the cars were new, and there was one gathering dust in a warehouse some where and he got it, but it's more likely a 3.4 was installed in the car.
The 2.8/3.1/3.4 are all refered to as 60 degree engines, they are a 60* Vee, small block V8's and Buick V6's including the turbo 3.8 liter Buick V6 used in the one year only 1989 Turbo Trans Am are all 90 degree vee engines.
