Hot Rod Magazine project?
In the new issue of HRM there is a reader poll looking for project cars readers would like to see. Given the number of 3rd gen. 305's out there, maybe a little effort on our part would end up w/ a properly done 305. I think we could all get some tips at the magazines expense. The poll is also available on line. Any comments?

you get better tips from reading and talking to the people that post here and spend their own money on their cars than you will from a magazine that reports on the results of using parts they get from free. thirdgen.org is real life not some hot rod magazine, not that the magazines aren't a good source of information.

Sorry ede, didn't mean to discount the great info available here. I've used a lot of it. Hope I can be of some help to others here as well. Just thought it would be cool to see one of our cars featured in the mag. for a change instead of always the Z-28's and T/A's. and no there's nothing wrong with them either. Just seems there is a lot more 305's on the road and we can use all the help we can get. This is by far the best auto related site I've ever seen so let's keep the good work here.

The magazines trying the right parts to hit a specific goal is what I was hoping to see them do. Then we can get an idea of what to realistically expect from changes we make. Let them spend the money and we will have more answers. Jow long ago were the Super Chevy articles published? They may be good to read.

I think the article AlexJH is referring to is the one published in Chevy High Performance Magazine, not Super Chevy. Unless Super Chevy is covering or has covered the same project.
CHP is doing a My Generation project currently and it started in July 2001 issue. They are on part 3 right now.
I've been following it since the begining since they are testing the car at LACR which is about 10 miles from where I live. I think I've even seen the car run one time at the track on it's maiden voyage.
I'll get you up to speed on the project.
They bought a 87 Camaro with a 305ci for $271 at an auction. The car barely ran due to some plug wires and a hairball in the cat (aka plugged up cat).
Their goal for this project is to build a 14 second dragstrip car on a budjet. The car has something like 170,000 miles on it and they are either going to blow it up or make it run in the 14's. That's the goal!
In stage one they added a new cat, new wires, K&N filter, Flowmaster exhaust, and some other non mod parts that needed fixing.
Stock the car ran a 17.45 @ 78.64mph. After the mods it ran a 17.21 @ 80.40mph. a 0.24 change.
In stage two which is the August issue they added a Edelbrock intake manifold, intake gasket, fuel pump, fuel line, a HO dual snorkel aircleaner and everything needed to hook it up. There's also a article in the mag covering the intake installation.
Now the car runs a 16.75 @ 84.25mph which is a increase of 0.70 sec from stock.
Stage 3 which is in the current issue they added Edelbrock headers, dynomax 3" cat, 3.73 gears, posi-traction, and a kit for the rear install.
Currently the car runs a 15.82 @ 86.74mph which is 1.63 seconds faster than stock times recorded.
They currently have a whopping $2,222.00 into the car.
Most parts are new and others were pulled from the junk yard.
All times are altitude-corrected.
They may have some info on their website which is http://www.chevyhiperformance.com
I looked but could not find any info.
It's a really great project, and a super project for those of you who have 87's.
This is one of those projects that does apply to use on a budget.
But then again nothing compairs to this group!!

I still think that car is SLOW for what it has on it, and they would have gotten it faster if they used SLP headers instead. But it seems like all the magazines use Edelbrock parts.

that's the type of story I was thinking about. I agree the times are real slow. that engine must have been almost dead to start with. Am I right or are 87's carb engines? I wonder how much better a TBI would have been on a fresh engine?

Yup, it is a carb engine.
It's a Q-jet and they have played a bit with the carb. Doing just minor simple things.
Next month they plan on adding a crane cam and a set of World products s/r torquer heads.
They figure this will be the area in which the 170,000 mile motor may not hold up. (bottom end)
I'll be interested to see if it does.
With all the mods done to it sofar.
This car still gets over 20mpg on the freeway. Not too shabby for a 15 sec car. Well, high 15's anyway.
I think we get that kind of milage with no mods at all.

91 Mystic Teal RS Convertible. 305 TBI, Auto, stock.
125,000 miles and still going strong.
Only minor mods planned for the near future.
Like headers, flowmaster exhaust, some ignition mods, K&N airfilter, Perhaps a chip if needed.
Waiting for the motor to blow up so I can install a ZZ4 crate motor. Let's just hope it don't blow up too soon.
