My brother has a 69 Firebird with a rebuilt 350 Pontiac engine in it. He would like to know how far he can safely bore out the block. This car will be a daily driver, so we want it to be reliable. Thanx.

I've heard the safest you can bore any block is .060.

Some blocks can't go +.060" You should have it sonic checked. I have a +.060 '73 350 4 bolt main block that has more cylinder meat than a 76 virgin 350 2-bolt in my backyard, plus it's suffering from core shift and it's thin in the worst possible area, on the thrust side. My machinist didn't even want to take it +.030"

Huck,

If the bores don't clean up at the next nominal oversize, all is not lost. If you're not in a hurry to finish the rebuild, pistons can be machined in alnost any finished size. On top of that, the old Poncho cases have a very solid casting design at the bottom end, and are one of the few engines that survives well with cylinder sleeving.
