Insurance Question.

Moderators, I posted this in 'body/interior' but am not getting much of a response there, so thought I would try here since this is where everyone is.
My 88 GTA got hit in the front left. I got an estimate for $1500. (New GM parts. New
nose, new left front fender, new fog light. The estimate mentions 'hidden damage' too,
and says 'hidden damage' discovered after the outside pieces are off, will ADD to the
bill. The headlight assembly might need to be replaced, which would add $ also.

So.... the other guy's insurance co sent out an adjuster, and I showed him the bodyshop
estimate for $1500. The adjuster estimated it at $1700. (Yeah, even more!) I haven't
had any work done on it yet.

I got a phone call a few days after the adjuster came over, from the ins office, and they
said they were sending me a check for the $1700. Iasked about the 'hidden damage' and
they said they would take care of it, with the bodyshop, if there was any.

But I noticed on the attachment to the check it says "Full and final settlement - 1988
Pontiac Firebird". I wonder if I cash the check if I will be legally 'agreeing' that I only get
$1700. Hmmmm. Any thoughts on this ? Thanks

Yes if you sign the check thats is stating that you agree that was all the damage you had at the time. I would wait until the body shop gets done with the work and see what the final bill comes to before you cash the check.

don't sign the check, if all you want is the car returned to the condition it was before it was hit just ask them to pay the body shop.

Talk to your insurance company. They should be able to handle all of the formalities with the other company. That's why you pay them. It's their job, not yours, to worry about all that crap.

Good luck

What state are you in??

Your insurance company is suposed to pay the damages, then sue the other company pending whos fault it is.

Thanks for the answers. I am going to hold onto the check for now. I am in Pa, by the way. My ins co (Allstate) is pretty useless. I already called them and they want nothing to do with it, since it was the other guy's fault. Allstate actually had the nerve to tell me to call the state attorney general's office to get help. Allstate is the laziest ins co I have ever known. Time to say bye bye to Allstate, after this bodywork is done.
