LT1 starter on 3rd gen
Have heard of a couple guys going this route when our starters crap out.
Who on here has done it? Any "problems" switching to a LT1 starter on a thirdgen (305)....or does it just bolt right in and hook right up?
Suggestions for replacement for someone with a toasted starter?
Thanks,
Dave

I dunno about the 305, but I have a 350 and thankfully it was a breeze. Didn't need any shims, it bolted right in. The only trouble you might run into is the length of the wires might not be quite long enough to reach so you either have to extend them, or just replace them with better ones hehe.
Also I ordered mine from turbobuicks.com...Even came with the bolts. Good luck!

That is one of the commonly used alternatives.
Others include the various "mini-starters" such as CVR, Tilton, Powermaster, CSI, etc. etc. etc. Those are virtually all based on eother the Hitachi starter motor (all parts look round), or the Nippondenso one (has a round solenoid but sort of squarish-looking motor).
ANYTHING with gear reduction is better than that Stone Age direct-drive Delco POS that came in these cars stock.

I believe there may be an issue with flywheel teeth. You may have to get a different one but I can't remember. I also believe the Nippondenso is the one to get and not the Hitachi one. I did a search on this before and thats what I remember but I could be wrong. I think the flywheel issue depends on the year of your thirdgen. This is probably all rumors and conjecture so take it for what its worth...RB would know.

As long as your car block is factory and has the smaller flywheel as it should. You can run that starter all day. I have one from an LS1 which is on all LS style engines. Just like the one on my 04 Silverado, so if my Z's ever goes bad there will be a swap and the truck goes in for warrany work for a bad starter
