How Much Horsepower?

What kind of power will this combo make? 1978 350 w/ stock crank and rods; ported and polished stock heads to 2.02/1.60 and 3-angle valve job; Comp 292 Magnum K-kit; Flat Top pistons; Holley Street Avenger Intake (dual plane); Edelbrock 750 carb and Accel HEI.

Thats alot of cam for stock heads, unless they are hogged out. Try some of the extreme grinds - something like 236/242 duration max, plus the 292 magnum is known for weak torque curve, or consider getting some aftermarket heads and having them worked, you will need some big flow numbers. The Extreme cams have a newer and more efficient lobe. I would also go with a single plane (victor jr.) with the size cam you're wanting, also a 750 holley wouldnt hurt

What would I have to do if I keep the stock heads for it to still work?

If you keep the stock heads, the main thing you'd have to do to get it to work welll would be to ... replace the heads.

The 78 heads (882 casting probably) are garbage. That motor, as it came, was 165 HP. Think about that for a minute; a 305 TBI has 170 HP, with a "peanut" cam. Those heads and the cam they came with (the .390"/410" POS) were the exact opposite of performance.

Get a set of real heads if you want results. It won't matter what cam you use, what carb, etc. as long as you are stuck with those. Any combo involving them is by definition a bad combo.

It will still work, but would not be a well matched combo. Either get those stock heads really worked or just buy a set of aftermarket heads like Trickflows $900 from Summit, and they flow 250+cfm out of the box. But if you want to stick with the stock heads I would go with a smaller cam like the Comp 230/236, it would make power to 6000+rpm and work with a dual plane. That size cam would work with everything you have, and it would still be on the big side. you should be able to make about 375hp with it, and good torque too
