What is this on the Vortec head?

What is this on the Vortec head?

What is the center thing that looks like it should be a heat riser. I thought Vortec heads DON'T have EGR setups!

I'm going by memory but I believe that thing is only like a 1/4 inch deep and doesn't go anywhere... Don't know why it's even there.

Thats correct. It is just an indentation in the casting.
