Speedometer died :(

I just got my car fixed after breaking a rocker arm stud, breaking one pushrod and bending another, and somehow managing not to drop a valve into the cylinder because one of the vavle locks came off, and IMMEDIATELY my speedometer broke. It didn't even wait 30 seconds! The upper cable turns the speedometer if we turn it, so the guage and upper cable aren't broken. The lower cable seemed tight and acted like it and the gears in the transmission are ok. This leads me to believe that something in the cruise control unit that the two cables connect to is bad. How hard is it to replace this and about how much do they cost new or at a junkyard?

pull it out of where it goes into the tranny, and turn the gear there, if it turns the speedo, then its either THAT gear or something in the tranny. if it doesn't turn, then fallow it and unplug it ever time it connects to the cruise control unit etc. that should help u figure out something.

The 82's had a cable driven speedo, so prolly the cable broke. Possibly the gear stripped out, but I doubt it.

It could be a PIA to disconnect the cable from the back of the cluster, there's a small sheetmetal screw (10mm head) down on the drivers side framerail, if you take this out it will give you the slack you need to pull the cluster out and squeeze the retainer to disconnect it.
