PLEASE HELP FAST! Cam change did something weird!

I put the XE262 Comp cam in my 83 LG4 T/A. It made a BIG difference in performance. My problem is it will hardly idle. And when it does, it will run very rough and die out after like 30 seconds. From like 1200rpm and up it runs excellent. I couldnt find any mixture screws to mess with. Unless theyre still capped off. Does that sound like it could be too rich or too lean?? Please help though, this is my daily driver and I need it to run right. Thanks in advance.

The a/f mixture screws are capped and located on the base plate of the carb, on the front. Cut 2 slots on either side of each one from the bottom and use a punch to get the bottom part out of the way. Your mixture screws are right there. You may need a special tool from sears or some place to turn them, you'll know when you see them!

Thats cool. Ill do that tomorrow. Do you think that will fix it? I know that with the cams ive put in before, ive had to adjust the mixture screws big time. Before i do that though, do you think that would most likely be the problem??

Do you know the specs for the cam? Odds are, if it was too extreme on the lobe separation, that would cause poor vacuum. When you go too low on vacuum then it will cause bad idle(which you are experiencing). However, without having the car in front of me, I don't know.

If you could list the specs of the cam, that would help us diagnose it a little better.

For reference the cam specs on the 262 are 218/224 dur @.050, lift of .462/.469 with a 110 degree lobe sep angle.

Hopefully you can get it running right with some tuning. I was afraid it might be a little too big to idle/drive well with your otherwise mild 305 auto though. Hopefully that is not the case... Good luck.

I would say it's the vacuum at idle causing chaos with the computer.
