Bad main bearings

For a while now my car has been making a whining sound that turns into a high pitched scream when I add RPM's. My Haynes manual says this is caused by bad needle bearings in the driveshaft. The repair looked simple so I figured I'd pull it out and fix it after my summer job is over. Now my car is idling lower than normal, the oil pressure won't come up, and there's a horrible slapping noise coming from the engine. My neighbor says these are syptoms of bad main bearings, is he right? Am I going to have to pull this old 305 out and have it rebuilt? Has anyone had similar problems in the past?

sounds like you have a hurt engine, but first thing i'd do is run a mechanical oil preasure gauge to be sure about that. i bought a camaro with a spun main and it ran and sounded fine.
