Carfax Question..........

My friend ran a carfax on his car and we seen this:

07/21/1995
35,858
New York
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Title issued

07/30/1997
36,874
New York
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Buffalo, NY
Title issued

03/24/1999
New York
Motor Vehicle Dept.
Depew, NY
Title issued

04/25/2000
New York
Motor Vehicle Dept.
NY
Title issued

Does that mean it had THAT MANY Owners?

What's the number before his VIN on the title? If it's 0, that means you're the original owner. Each owner past that, it goes up a number, until it hit's the 11th owner, at which point it starts going through the alphabet. At least that's how it works here in New Jerky... ahem... Jersey.

If you loose your title and request a duplicate, or if you take your title to a title pawn and they add themselves as a lienholder, or yes, if ownership changes hands, a title will be issued.

Carfax is a rip-off. The concept of proposing a "Free Report" that gives you the impression that there is something wrong with your car is lame. You are then suposed to get paranoid and order the report. I have paid for the unlimited use service twice and found out the most important items of discovery (junk slips, wrecks) were not disclosed. Title transfers were sketchy too.

I would take any report from carfax with a grain of salt.

I take one sided opinions from individuals w/ isolated instances w/ a grain of salt also.

I know alot of people who were pissed when they did their report after they bought the car and found out it was a salvage car. I hear them say "If I only checked it first...."

Second, CarFax never offered a "free report" like you mention, its a Free Record Check. It lets you know if its worthwhile to buy a report. If you are the second owner of the car, and only two records show up, guess what, its going to be two title transfers, one to the original owner, and the second to you, so don't waste your money. If like 25 show up, then its worth looking into.

Isolated occurances ? I dont think so....

Here is what I'm talking about.

"Just goes to show CarFax isn't perfect. I am pretty sure my car was in a wreck at one time on the passenger side and that didn't show up."

"Hey Don, got the results back and I'm kinda surprised! I know that this car has spent time in WA and in CA, but it was also in HI and in Guam for awhile. There's nothing in the report to reflect that, as well as the possibly unreported/unchecked "salvage" sticker I found on the windshield after I got it."

"ANd those 2 important things carfax wanted me to know is that it passed emissions in 99 and was reported have 103K on it in 1993. What a crock"

"I know that it had body work done to it (have the pictures from the last owner who bought it with the damage) but that didn't show up on it"

Carfax is overated.

Talk about one sided,
How much do you get when somebody clicks on your carfax link? 5 cents ? lol

Don

Yeah, really, get a grip. You think that if somebody dings your fender w/ a shopping cart, and you throw a junkyard fender on it and spray paint it that its going to show up on a report?

Also, it doesn't matter where the car was. You could live in the US, drive it around the world ten times, and guess what? Carfax will never know. What does matter, is where the car was sold at, failed/passed emissions at, was salvaged/flooded at, etc... Anything significant can trigger a report, not a 6 month stay in HI (probably military where the owner kept the registration under there home of record) or a fender bender at the Quickie Mart. They are insignificant.
