coolant passages and head gaskets

ive already thrown my heads back on. this is just a question ive been wondering about...

why do they make the whole for coolant to pass through the gasket so small, in comparisson to the coolant port on both the block and the head on a 350?

a friend of mine said if i expand those wholes, my engine wont warm up right. cause their is too much coolant circulation.... i thaught that was something we wanted.. better coolant circualtion....

i believe these where fel-pro gaskets.

just curious.

The holes are designed to regulate where the coolant flows. Not all parts of the head produce heat equally. The hottest place in the head is at the center on the exhaust side, because there's 2 exhaust ports there with very little water around them. So that's where the head gasket tries to make the most water go. The coolest places are on the intake side. If you look at your gaskets, you'll probably notice that there are 2 holes in that lower center spot under the 2 exhaust ports, and much smaller holes over on the other side.

If you just haphazardly enlarge holes without understanding what's going on, you could very easily make the heads have places that are way too hot and too cold. Almost certainly, that one hot spot on each side will run hotter if water is diverted elsewhere. The guys who make head gaskets have researched the water distribution pretty thoroughly.

If you think you need more water flow, get a better water pump, like a Stewart.
