My moms got a 96 Maxima and it like to knock about 3 seconds on startup when the engine is cold. Is there a reason why? Car has 86,000 and runs Mobil 1 and Motorcraft Filter.

 

wiat a sec, isn't motorcraft the ford brand?Though I don't think this has anything to do with knock. You should check the timing, and make sure you're using the recommended grade of gas.

There is no Distributer it runs on DIS and yes I'm running 91 or bette rlike the manuel recommends. It sounds like stating a motor right after an oil change.

 

Has it always knocked on startup with the motorcraft filter??

Some filters bleed down when they are shut off.

This will cause an engine knock until the filter "re-primes" itself.

I would try a puro-later, mobil1, or any other brand (besides fram) and see if this changes anything.

I've had good luck with AC.

Wait my mistake. It knocks with a bostch filter, autozone filter(deautch or what ever)um and thats it. I used to run motorcraft filters and do not remember it knocking. AC doesnt make a filter for the car. i checked and asked.

 

If it didn't knock with the Motorcraft, I would switch it back to see if the problem goes away.
