What would make a car continue to run (not diesel) after key is removed?

Its not a thirdgen. Im trying to help a friend. Its a fuel injected four in a early 90 olds. Thanks for any help.

It is your ignition switch in your steering colum, Like almost for sure, replace that, which will be like less than 30 min, and you'll be cool. Laters Greg

Please keep in mind, the actual switch is further down the column. The Key activates a rack, that pushes a rod that actually plays with the switch. Just follow the rod down the left side of the column (keep in mind, there are two of them over there, one for highbeam switch as well) and you will find the switch.
