Emissions

I got an 89 Firebird Formula, and I have to take it in for an emissions test soon. I wanted to know, do third gens usually have a problem with passing emissions tests?
Thanks for your responses!

Whether or not a thirdgen f-body will pass the sniffer, like any other car, greatly depends on how well it was maintained.

Ill be taking my camaro in for an emmisions test sometime this week. Ill let you know how easy it is considering my car has most definately seen better days.

Right now Im considering replacing the spark plugs, spark cables, distributor, filter and redo a few wires over the engine because they all look kinda worn out. Plus my dad tells me it might make the diff between passing or failing the test replacing all that good stuff.

Anyone have an opinion on replacing those things? The plugs look origional meaning they got 87k on them. The distributor isnt original its an accel hei? i think. Do these things really help or hurt emmisions?

If you don't know when the car was tuned up last, then it is a very good idea to do a full tune-up before going through an emissions test.(Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, all filters, oil change, check all vacuum lines, etc.) Also, make sure all mechanical problems are taken care of. If all those areas are ok, then you should have a very good shot of passing. With an older engine, there could be other problems that are not that apparent, but the emissions test should be able to give you a clue as to what is wrong if there is a problem. Good luck.

Thanks for your responses! I actually had everything checked out at dobbs, and everything seems to be in order. Some stuff was wrong, but it was taken care of by them. Fluids were all changed except for the rear, and i have to replace the alternator. I don't think there will be a problem with it passing, but when i start it, a little bit of black smoke comes out of the exhaust, I hope that will not fail my car.

Ive got my emissions system sitting in a box in my garage. I dont know how much good its doing there, maybe making the air a little cleaner for my lawmower?

Here in California the emissions BS is beyond ridiculous. I don't bother going through all that garbage i just take it to this dealership my friend works at and he can give me as many smog certificates as i my heart desires.
