changed carb and distributor..now idles low...and smokes

Hey, I am new to this fourm I posted this in the carb forum also. Well my friend has a 1986 trans am with a 305 HO 85 motor in it. He was having trouble with being to rich and other things so he decied to switch it over to run a non elec-controled (vacum-controlled) distributor and carb. The carb is a factory NON-electric controlled quadra-jet off of a 350 and was runing fine when removed. The distributor is a non-electirc vacum operated kind off of a late 70's 350, it also was runing fine before. The change whent over with no problems, however when we started it up it souned diffrent (exhaust louder). It is now idleing very low, very laggy very hard to get up to speed, and burning oil very badly. Can anyone think of anything we could have done while instaling the Distributor and Carb that would cause these problems. It was running fine before. Could the timing being way off cause the oil burning problem? Or is it something with the carb?
Thanks for the help

You need to correct the timing, idle mixture, idle speed and secondaries.

We we got it running better. However we are still wondering about a small wire that conects to the bottom of the carb's throttle arm. Its not the throttle cable and its not the crusie control. It smaller than them but it connects onto the carb the same place they do.

do you have a 700r4 transmission?does it have overdrive?if so that is the throttle valve cable.it MUST be correctly adjusted to allow your trans to work properly!there is a release on the t.v. cable, you need to press it in to remove the load on the cable.then, with the engine off, pull the throttle wide open and the cable will adjust its self.that should get a baseline.you can adjust shift points a bit by moving the cable a click or two in either direction but don't go crazy with it.
