Why Do Good Computers Go Bad ??

I know, it's because they start to hang out with the wrong crowd.... But seriously, the computer on my car is hosed, and the mech says a new one will fix my driveability problem. (Very rich running, stalling). He said the computer in there now is not the original, so the orig has burned out previously, apparently, so this new one I am putting in will be computer number 3 at least (I bought the car 3 years ago, and this is the first time I have had to replace the computer).

Is this a common occurrence? Should I have the mech check out the wiring for short circuits?

btw, the computer going in is a GM reman, for $220. Good price ?

Thanks

I don't know about the price, but if this is the third computer, it sounds like there is something else going on there. After buying your new ECM you should probably go over the harness as best you can and try to find bad grounds, or if the harness has been hacked somewhere and that's causing ECMs to burn up. I have 120K on mine and it's still ticking away, so I don't think there's a durability issue with them.

Dude, you can get 165 ECMs off of Ebay and the Classifieds on this site for a dime a dozen. I wouldn't pay $220.

ECM's are like any other electronic devices ecsessive heat/cold moisture all have a neggitive effect on this device.
Dodge is the grand daddy of bad ecm because the ecm is located in the air induction under the hood.
Now The germans have it right! Heated ecms some evn got fans built on them.
I would look at the condition of the surrounding area for rot/rust water leak from something. Your best bet is to get a used ecm 15/20$ plug it in yourself and see if it fixes the problems. If the ecm had been replaced with a different one I would ask around to find out what the numbers are supposed to be with your aplication. Many different ecms will work in your car but you need the correct prom. Junks yards will most likely give you an ecm that came out of something else and tell you to swich the prom so that might not work.
Good Luck!

Pep Boys sells the MAF ecm for around $100 if you have your core with you (Take out the PROM). They are Borg Warner remans. They also have 3 different ways to check the harness to make sure you're not going to burn the new one (the warranty is void if you don't check at least 1 way supposedly) and pin-out diagrams of the harness.
