The smoke is usually from the turn signal switch assembly or wires for cruise control or wipers grounding out inside the column.

Has nothing to do with the heater core.

Had that happen to me in a non thirdgen car. Mine was the turn indicator shorting out or something. Just open it and find whats burnt looking and replace it. Be a tad carefull, theres a fair few parts in there.

I would worry about it, its a fire hazzard.

Its not bad to replace, but a little complicated.

I belive there is a tech article on how to dis-assemble the column.

If not, Vader has a great exploded view of the column.

Actually it CAN be smoke from the engine compartment traveling up the column and exiting right behind the steering wheel. It happened to me today.

You should be able to smell the difference between burning oil, wires, or coolant.

You must be missing the foam "seal" that is supposed to surround the inner jacket and steering tube bearing:

In case you get this far:

Vader I just love your visual aids when you help solve a problem!

Now here's a guy that takes his own car apart just to show you what he's talking about.

Now that's what I call service!!

Ya gotta love this guy!
