Oil gage screwed up??
Oil gage screwed up??
I posted this on the electronics board but didn't get a response.
Has anyone had this prob? My oil gage doesn't move smoothly over the number anymore. It kinda moves in steps, but still is accurate. I replaces the sending unit, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?

Dan,
It's probably mechanical binding in the instrument movement itself. How old is the car, and was it ever in a collision?

Pieces of dirt within the movement will do that. Little metal shavings are the worst, being magnetic. Those are a real chore to work on because the scale is riveted to the movement, so it's tough to see into it or get a needle in to clean it out.
You might be better off to get another one at the junkyard.

It's the orignal 1988 gage, it's an 88 IROC. Two things may have caused it. 1 I had to take the cluster out to replace the speedo cable. 2 I got hit in the right front fender a couple of years ago, not to hard but enough for a new fender. I don't remember when the gage started acting funny, I always thought it was casued by a wrong sending unit. Do you know if the gage is easy to access when the cluster out? Is it worth taking apart? It does work, it's just annoying. Thanks!

Part 2 to my story. Last night I took out the gage cluster and tried to clean the oil gage movement, not easy! I got it back together, still the same problem. I did notice that when I start the car the oil gage jumps to 60 psi, then I turn the car off and the gage returns to the mid-point, then I turned the head lights on and the gage dropped to 0 psi. So I have a gounding prob to track down, I was going to find a cluster gage out of a junk camaro but this grounding problem changes everything. I also was thinking of spraying WD-40 in the oil gage, will this hurt it?
