What do you think is the ultimate recipie for a thirdgen?

Im just curious what people given an opportunity and a little cash would do to make their thirdgen just the way they want it.

What base car would you start with?

What would be the goal of your car, drag, show, street ride, all round?

What kind of budget would you expect to need to create such a car? (Lets be real here, keep it under 10-15k or so)

And of cource, what would you do to the car to make it your ultimate car?

Be as detailed as you like. Im hoping to get good ideas from this topic that I can put towards my own car.

I like this topic
15k max.
I would probably buy an older car in good condition. Ehh something in the 2500$ range
I would build a very strong SB probably a 400 and keep low compression pistions and some after market LC heads. 2500/3000$
Then 1500$ for a 144 powercharger.
1000$ for a tb 400.
Build a bullet proff 12bolt rear also around 1500$
and spend the rest here and there paint, hood, wheels, stereo.
SSC
If I win the lotto you guys will see one Heck of a 3rdgen

i would buy a cheap 88 or 89 GTA 350, rebuild the engine, put on a supercharger, new custom paintjob, totally restore the interior.

I'd start with a later IROC or Z-28 5-speed with solid paint and body work, preferably something I would need to paint or restor the interior. Then, a T56 6 speed would go in. A super-rammed 355 built to spin to about 7 grand and make about 400-450 hp would power the car. In would go a bullet proof Ford 9" rear with 3.23 or 3.42 gears. A nice set of 17" wheels and tires, Baer's 13" brakes and Spohn suspension pieces would provide stopping, turning, and stiffness. Whatever money is left over would go into a nice stereo. After all is said and done, I'd probably be closer to $20K, but I'd have my daily-driver road race and auto-x car with enough power to hold its own at the strip or on the street.

my choice would be an 86 camaro sport coupe.

LS6 from an 02 Z06
T56 from 02 camaro
7 5/8 10 bolt from 02 camaro with detroit locker and strange axles
wheels from Z06
brake system from 1LE package camaro.
hotchis suspension package.
stock hood and factory spoiler.
millenium yellow from 01 vette color selection.
recaro seats, small cage and 5 point harnesses. that should pretty much cover the essentials.... possible under 15k? depends on luck. lol just my opinion. any others?

Well, I'd start w/ an IROC and my goal would be a very streetable, N/A car that would kick butt on the street. If I'm spending @ 15k on mods after buying the car I'd do this:
1)427 smallblock, a Motown assembled shortblock w/ solid internals from Bill Mitchell ($4600)
2) AFR heads to match 210 or 220cc's??? Don't know what AFR makes besides 190's ($1600)
3) Ported miniram setup ($1200)
4) DFI ($1000)
5) Vigilante TQ converter w/ appropriate stall speed ($700)
5) Built 700R4 tranny ($1350)
6) Custom cam ($450)
7) Custom driveshaft ($500)
8) 12 bolt rear w/ appropriate gears($2200)
9) ZR-1 wheels 17"x9.5" fronts and 17"x11" rears ($1000)
10) 315 wide BFG drag radials is the rear ($375)
11) Some decent tires for the front ($300)
12) Spohn subframes, LCA's, LCA brackets, panhard bar, and TQ arm ($875)
13) Hooker Super Comp headers and a Mufflex 4" cat-back ($900?)

Grand total is $17,050 (all prices are estimates) and your going to have some misc. expenses that will add up like gaskets, oil pump, probably a better radiator, etc.
But you would absolutely FLY in that thing and it'd kick some serious butt on the street!!! I'd also spend another $1200 on some Baer brakes so that I'd live longer than a week.

I'm doing something similar w/ my IROC, just not w/ anything near that big a budget and I'm using the stock shortblock. Check out the webpage in my sig.

Just started my project like that. $200 91' Firebird. Got it as a steal cause they practically paid me to take the car. Eventually it will be Spohn suspension, Baer brakes, custom interior, dual tbi 350+, auto with OD, (i can't find a way to put a manual and still be able to shift without hitting the steering wheel), 12 bolt or 9" (still not sure yet), white paint job with blue ghost flames underneath, still deciding between 3 rims. It will probably cost way too much but oh well.

Its really funny, many people would say that they would buy a lamborghini or ferrari if they had won the lotto. I cannot understand why people would wast that kind of money when you can buy beautiful cars and finish them under 30 grand, then have money for insurance, and house, and other things...

If i ever win the lotto, i will have a racing 92 z28, TT 300zx, TT supra

LOL, i wish..

Just a basic explanation, but an explanation nonetheless...

Start with an IROC, remove the engine and computer system, replace it with a 302 cubic inch from the first gen Camaros. Then I'd work on restoring the exterior to like-new condition, polish the stock IROC wheels, get wider rear tires, and restore the interior. I'd probably add a few little interior customizations such as a switch panel and/or new radio. Oh yeah, gotta get that ASCD Daytona Turbo hood...

EDIT: I forgot the Flowmasters...

I would build a street/strip machine that could also be easily parked in a car show and belong.

I would start with an IROC-Z. I would drop in a ZZ4 with headers, Superram, high flow cats, 4'' cat back, aluminum driveshaft, T56 with Centerforce Dual friction clutch, 3.73 posi rear, 295 tires on the back, 275 up front on 17'' ZR1 rims and a nice paint job to back it all up.

Future: ZZ4 TPI w/EGR, T56, 3.42 or 3.73, Spohn strut tower brace and LCA's

Wow, talk about choices

To be honest I know just over nothing about modyfying cars etc, all my experience has been in restoration of old vettes. So this post is giving me excelent ideas and things to learn about.

Could we try and make a mod list for a tighter budget too? Say 4-6k, which would probably help more people out there right?

honestly i can understand the whole ferrari\lamborghini thing and i would prolly be halfway tempted to do somethin like that. I wouldnt give a damm about the speed or anything like that just the fact that they look bad *** and basicly NOBODY has them. the common person would drive buy and see anyone of the cars you guys talked about above and say hey that is a pretty sweeet lookin camaro\trans am. but im sure if they were drivin down the street and saw a lamborghini drivin right there with them you would get a lil more of a response. and you dont have to worry bout someone sayin hey thats a sweet car that is just like Joe Bobs car. As you can see above the only reasons to buy a car like that is to impress other people. i would rather impress myself and fix up somethin.

How can you put a price on a dream?

I'd start with any year Z28 T-top. Then I'd build a Northstar two stage twin turbo that I've been thinking about with appropriate rwd trans. I'd shave the handles, locks, and mirrors, paint the car silver and fade it to black from the bottom to top with reflective window tint to match. It'd be all the way on the ground with a complete Spohn suspension, a stb, neons under it, and low profile 17x10's. The interior would be silver on black with a custom polished aluminum dash and gauge cluster. I'd use the modified Bose system out of my car for tunes.

I know some people so I can get all the parts and labor on the cheap, but I bet it's still over the 15K mark maybe. For the 4-6 grand range check out my mods.

Btw, if i had the money to spend on a ferrari\lamborghini I would not buy either. Im not really into foreign cars. Well, maybe an F50 would be the acception

Personally, Id buy a Z06, a viper, and a 67 Shelby GT500, in that order. About 70-90k each aint they? The Z06 be the bright yellow daily driver just cause its a vette. The viper would be the viper blue with facing stripes made for drag racing and put rediculous amounts of hp out. And the GT500 would be for the shows and those long sunday drives. And would look just like the one in the movie Gone in 60 seconds

And with whatevers left over I would build the fastest street legal thirdgen I could that still had that amazing body design. And yea the camaro would be the car with the thumping stereo, leather interior, and of cource black in color.

Now all I gotta do is figure out how to rig the lottery....

Yea say you won 200 million why not say screw the lambo/ferrari and just go for the gusto and get a MclarenF1??? fastest production car in the world! It would be, you wish you could look at me but im too fast It's rumored around here Pueblo Co theres a real MclarenF1 roaming the streets. Wonder how my Lg4 would stack up against it? NOT! More to the point I wonder who lives here and can affored a 250k car?

Reborn does that 6k include the purchase price of the car+ mods? We ould probably get some goddies under 6k but not to much.

All I know is that my camaro would have this 605 engine I saw somewhere. I wish I could remember where.
The rest of the stuff would go along to fit it.
As I remember the engine itself was 13000 or so.

i think my 400-89RS will be pretty close to the limit. 520 hp works pretty good when propelling 3300lbs with a 4.10 gear.
