nasty smell, no cats, need help??
I have a 84 z28 with a 350 from a c20(crap), and just recently I've noticed this nasty *** smell, almost like rotten eggs, but I've never really smelled rotten eggs so I dunno, but, I do know that it makes me wanna puke all over...any ideas? I have no cats, headers to pipes all the way back to race bullets...also, my car's voltage use to be horrible, like barely 11, so I fixed a splice the previous owner did from the alternator back to somethin, and now it's at 18+ all the time...and I know this isn't good, but, I have a new battery, alternator, and starter, and all of my connections are good, any clue? thanks a ton for all your help

rotten egg smell is prolly a high sulfer content in the gasoline if I remember right from other ppl saying
but first thing first don't worry about that smell as of right now
get the voltage fixed
18v isn't good. start frying your batt QUICK doing that as well as maybe hurting other things
more voltage means more current
more current is more heat through the elctrical system

If you're really pushing 18 volts, that smell is your battery cooking. Put a real voltmeter on it to verify the actual voltage.

No, if your battery is reading 18.5 volts with the car off, it's probably about to blow. You need a new alternator and a new battery. BTW, I'm headed out your way in about 3 weeks (madison area). PM me if you're still having problems.

Some gasoline has a higher sulphur content. If you don't have cats then it gets amplified.
Switch brands of gas or put cats on your car. Your choice. Not much else causes that smell.

I'll add unburt HC's will still smell,,,but for the majority of folks the cat is letting the sulfur smell leak through.
This guys case sure "smells" like the acid fumes are getting to him.

I got the alt. from napa...I don't think I still have the reciept which blows, but yeah I dunno...that smell was killin me...I was almost sure I was gonna puke, but I did pop the hood and smelled around and it did smell like it was comin from the battery area...oh yeah, where could I get a cheap rebuild kit? there's a pretty decent amount of steam/smoke comin from the hood cracks after I get on it good...and when it's just idling I can see it comin from the breather cap...thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it

The alt overcharged the battery. The sulfur smell may possibly be the sulfuric acid in the battery. 18.5-19V is WAY too much. 15V while running would be about the most you should see. Defective parts aren't too rare.

i have seen some batteries read up to 20 volts with the motor off & not blow up.
the highest running voltage i have seen was right at 25 volts without blowing the battery, how the ECM survived on that 1 i don't know.
most all of those came in for eating every light that was turned on with the engine running, & most all of them had smoked the radios too.
i have seen some batteries that had blown up from an overcharge of only 16 volts.

I have seen batteries go with 18 volts for awhile. They will often start bubbling over or pop the caps off the top.
I work at Advance and see all kinds of shady crap...on a daily basis. I saw a guy with a jeep with no voltage reg. Constant 18volts to his battery. He drove it daily. Sometimes it would boil over, sometimes it would pop the caps...his solution...duct tape the caps ontop of the battery down.
Take your alternator off and take it to NAPA. Have them check it. I think the alternator is your problem. It is overcharging your battery. It likely ruined the battery also. They should have your name in your history there anyways.
Hell if I am wrong at least you narrowed it down. They will test it for free. And replace it if that is the problem.
Trust me a "remanufactured" alternator doesn't mean its going to last. Basically if the brushes are bad...they replace the brushes and send it out. Next time it is used the diodes, regulator, or something else could go wrong.
It is so cheap for them to rebuild alternators and starters that they can afford to keep giving you new ones. They take your core...clean it up, throw a 2$ part in it and sell it to someone else for 100$. Its a scam.
Just take the alternator to napa..have them check it. This will at least narrow your search down.
