new engine, idles in drive-dies in gear...
Finally replaced my original 305 MAF TPI with a 358 MAF TPI in my '86 Z28. Engine is running excellent at idle and above in park, but dies when I shift into gear, unless I step on the gas. Do I need a different converter or could a slow IAC cause this problem. The new engine has ported 64cc (milled) S/R Torquer heads with 2.02/1.60 valves, a 262* Comp Extreme Energy cam, 1.6 rockers, ported plenum, stock exhaust manifolds, SLP from Y-pipe to tail pipe, and 40 psi fuel pressure. Thanks for the help, this site is one of the best things for fellow camaro/firebird owners!

First set/check the timing, then probably think about a new EPROM, start with one from a MAF L98.
What's the idle RPMs in park? Checked for vacuum leaks too? IAC shoudl compensate for some, but not if they're ecessive.

low idles at 650 rpm and high idles at 1000 rpm in park and there are no vacuum leaks. The IAC is giving a lazy reading on a OTC Monitor 4000 E. I'm going to replace the IAC today, hope I don't need a new torque converter, and I think it's time to start a new venture in prom burning!
Not related to your problem but get rid of the stock exhaust manifolds. The S/R torquer heads have literature with them that tells you to put headers on and free up your exhaust so you don't overheat the heads. A friend of mine with an L98 and the same heads had a heat problem till he put headers and a catback on. I had headers and catback before I did the S/R heads so I didn't have a problem with heat.Just a bit of advice.
