What gauge wire?

I'm in the process of changing my temp gauge sending unit. I was taking the wire lead off when the rectangular plastic thing that surrounds the connector broke into little pieces. I guess the years of heat finally took its toll. Is it necessary to replace that and if so, what gauge of wire do I need? It still clips onto the sending unit, it just doesn't have the complete plastic thing around it anymore.

The plastic thing really doesn't add much to the whole picture.

The wire is about 20 gauge. But if the thing still clips on and works, I'd leave it alone. That's the way it is on my car, and has been for about 200,000 miles.
