5.0L engines
I know you all are Chevy Fans, and so am I, but in the 80's which 5.0l engines stock were Faster for the quarter mile the Mustang or the Camaro?

Depends on the year.
Up till 84 the mustang engines were as ugly if not worse than an LG4. I'd venture a cease fire car could take 'em, and i am sure an L69 would walk all over them.
In 85 the first stang 5.0 HO was introduced w/ a roller cam and other things that gave it real power. They were still carbed. Pretty much an even match between an L69/TPI car and one of these.
86, the first EFI 5.0 HOs relatively suck *** , but so do the 86 TPIs. I'd give the edge to the stang.
The 87-88 SD stangs tend to be some of the quickest out of the box and would have a small edge on a stick TPI car. The auto TPI cars will get spanked bad.
89s tend to be a little slower, maybe the learning curve of going to MAF, i'd say pretty close, maybe the edge to a 5spd TPI.
Past 90 they are pretty close 5spd to 5spd and A4 to A4.
Obviously, the weight/optioning of the stang in question will count for a lot. For example, A4 stangs tend to run a good bit slower than 5spd cars. Heavy GTs and verts run a bit slower than a hatch LX and a second slower than a stripper LX notch. I'm basing my comparisons assuming a hatch LX type normal weight.

Actually, having owned a few mustangs(dare I say it?) and doing much research on the topic, the early 5.0 stangs(82-84) were much faster than LG4 f-body's and about even with the L69 HO.
Typical 1/4 mi. times for an LG4 f-body are 16.8-17.5. Mustang GT's would run around 15.3-16.2. L69 HO's were about the same as that.
Each progressive year the cars were pretty comparable, with the mustang having a 2-4 tenths advantage due to its lighter body.

To kinda add to what everyone said. My ex had a LX and when I parked my camaro next to it the camaro was a good 2 1/2ft or more longer so that kinda gives you an idea of what a smogged out 305 has to deal with. In general mustangs have the edge 5.0 vrs 5.0. But to be unfair
mustangs race in the same class as vetts and vipers on a rally circut so you should compare a mustang to a vett
