412 Build Started Tonight..And Yesterday Night

So guys got all my stuff back from the machine shop, had them tank it,bore/hone it .030, align bore and drill outside bolts for my splayed main caps, sqaure deck it, and balance my rotating assembly.

Excited as i was i pretty much jumped right to it (when i had time ofcourse). Now the only problem is i got #1 in turned her over a few times no problemo. Dropped #6 in, turn her over 1ce no problem, turned her over again and CLUNK!!!! damn rod is hitting the cam so im guessing im going to have to grind it down (actualy rod itself). Anybody have any suggestions?

Oh and specs are as follows

412ci's (.030 over and 3.8" stroke) 4 Bolt Splayed Caps w/ ARP Main Studs

Eagle 4340 3.8" stroke Crank w/ 400 mains

Scat 4340 6" H Beam Rods with ARP 8740 Cap Screws

SRP Forged 4cc Domed Pistons

Super Victor Intake

AFR 220 Heads 76cc Chambers

Solid Roller Cam
264/272 @ .050
.649/.649 Lift
107 LSA

850CFM Might Demon Carb

If im missin somethin you want to know about go ahead and ask and ill let you know.

Here are the pics

Looks awesome! that thing is going to haul.

Did you put cam lube on the cam bearing? In my directions I was told only to put oil on the cam bearings but many solid rollers are different.

If you mean many solid rollers are different as in some dont need to have lube inbetween them and the bearings your wrong. But yes i did put lube on the cam bearings.

I know on most 383's you have to run a small base circle cam. I dont know about the 412's. Just something to think about.

If you grind on the rods, then you will have to get everything rebalanced.

Not only is the base smaller the lobe is smaller by the same amount. The lobe still has the same lift and everything, its just that the lobe starting point is closer to the centerline of the cam.

Three thing that you need.

1. Water

2. Soap

3. A collection of scrub brushes

Clean out that lifter valley. That's filthy. You do know all the gunk will be mixed in with the oil, don't you?

When I built my 406 I used capscrew rods and there were a couple spots that still needed grinding. They guys that balance assemblies for my machinist did the clearancing, I guess from experience they know where their supposed to remove the metal. Sounds like you'll have a strong combo.

Don't forget to paint the block.

wow that one side looks real good

when you install head studs, are you supposed to strectch them as you would with arp rod bolts?

also what is the advantage to head studs?

in a couple of those pics it looks like a quick change timing cover in the background........... I ran one on mine and it leaked like a sive and I had to reseal it twice with a ton of gm's special sealant before it would quit. It was the one thing I did wrong in my last buildup was put on of those on.

Everything else looks sweet man!

Donno if you are supposed to stretch them like you would bolts but i did just incase

Well i donno what the real advantage of them are but i know some of those bolts were a BITCH to get to on those AFR heads, i had to grind down the sockets so skinny that i broke 2 of em.

Donno what pic you saw it in but ya i got a cloyes 2 piece cover, i had a mr gasket one before and just like yourself it leaked like hell. Hopefully this one is better, now im just having issues with my gear drive fitting underneath it fixed it to where it fits under but now i gotta get the clearance right inbetween the idler gear and the block...
