car idling high, then low, then dying

i've been reading through past posts in an attempt to see if i can find someone else with the above problems. the car in questions is a 3.1L 91 firebird LH0. the SES light goes on, and after many failed attempts at trying to get the car to idle after turning it over, you can hear something click every 5 seconds or so from somewhere under the hood (fuel pump)!? also, the car heats up unbearably (the right side of the hood heats up to where it will scorch you) though the engine temperature gauge seems content at 220.

the error codes i pulled out were 22, 23, 34 and 53. i'll post back if i figure out what's wrong with it.

oh yeah, and i haven't had any major tune ups (plugs, wires). i HAVE gotten regular maintenence stuff though, like PCV, tranny and engine fluid/oil, filter, etc.

thanks.

Are you sure its a code 53? I have the 91 service manual in front of me, and there is no code "53" for that application. Anyway, you have codes for the TPS, MAT, and MAP. All possibly reltaded and maybe not. All three sensors use a 5V reference from the ECM. I would be curious if you have the full 5V at each sensor. They also share a sensor ground inside the ECM. Could be a wiring problem (ground or so), or a bad ECM. Its very unlikely that all three sensors are bad. Good luck.

hey man, thanks for replying. yes, i have the service manual too, and indeed there is no code 53. it goes straight to 54 after leaving of the 40's.

i'll check out the voltage at each terminal and see what's up. atleast i have some sorta starting point now. as long as it doesn't involve any high tech pcb wizardry, i think i should be able to figure it out.

thanks again. i'll post here if i make progress.
