1987 Camaro - Yes/No?
1987 Camaro - Yes/No?
Hi guys. I was thinking of buying an '87 Camaro sports coupe. It has a 4 barrel 305 (the one rated at like 165 hp). The car has 130k miles on it. 5 speed transmission, with a slightly slipping cluth. The guy is giving me a new clutch to install. The transmission itself is excellent, no problems shifting, very smooth. The interior looks pretty decent, the only problem I can see is the sagging headliner (should be no big deal to fix that up). The car has some nice chrome Cragar rims on it, the tires are like new (good tread). The paint job looks very nice, it's bright red. There is some small amount of rust over the wheel arches and a speck or two on the 1/4 panels. I can't hear ticking or knocking from the engine but for all I know he is running super-thick oil to hide that
. The major problem with the car is that the steering column is loose, it wobbles freely up and down and slightly side to side, however I have read on these forums that there are screws on the inside that can be tightened to fix this. OK, the guy is asking $1000, can probably get it for 900. What do you guys think???
One other thing, it has stock exhaust, with a tiny leak somewhere, nothing major. And the brakes are OK, needs some freshing up though

I say go for it. As far as the column goes, i would just get a new one. Depending on the car's optioning, you can get a used column for around fifty bucks. The rust is no huge deal either. As long as it doesn't go through, you can just bondo it. Ive had my Bondo in place for a year plus and no cracking etc. Just do it in thin layers. The brakes are a no brainer. If you can change an alternator, you can figure out how to do the brakes.
Go for it! its not a bad price, what about rust though, if there is a lot of rust I don't know!

DualCarb, the rust is only very light, nothing major at all
BTW, thanks for the input guys, it is very much appreciated!

for that price i'd be all over that. really good deal especially at a time when camaro's will soon be out of production and the value of them should hopefully be going up. finding one with the 5 speed makes it a good start also.
