Starting at square 1

Hello folks. I have a 89 Formula 5.7. I'm planning on pulling the motor this winter to freshen it up and also planning on some performance mods. I don't want to get extravagant but 300 HP would be a nice goal, maybe a little more. From what I've read so far, this seems reasonably achievable, even living in California. My question is, can anyone point me in the direction of some books or articles with suggestions? Thanks in advance. Glad I found this site!

Welcome aboard,
Others can probably give you a lot more detail than me, but I'll start you off.
A good place to start is a set of headers, and since you live in Cal. emissions are strict there right. I know that Edelbrock sells emissions legal headers, but they are prone to rust. If you have the money get a set of SLP headers, people say these are the best. Then get yourself a good cat-back. I just bought the Hooker 3" Aero Chamber, which I haven't put it on yet but I heard a sound clip and sounded good.
You can start off by advancing your timing. Get yourself a K&N filter.
What kind of gears do you have in the car. If you have the sucky 2:73's, and I'm assuming you have OD, a set of 3:42's would be best for mpg and acceleration, but I went with 3:73's.
With living in Cal. I'm not sure if changing the cam will effect your results too much. But that would be a definate place to start.
Good luck on the rebuild.
