belt routing

Hi I've got an 88 gta with the 305 tpi.
It's a project car. I removed the serpentine belt some time ago and bought a new one from GM. Trouble is I forgot the routing. The under hood sticker that should show the routing is missing. Can someone that has an 88 305 tpi Trans am let me know the correct route. Thanks in advance.

Just remember that the smooth pullies go along the back side of the belt, and the grooved ones use the ribbed side of the belt. It should loop around your compressor, down under the tensioner and water pump, then up over the alternator, under the power steering, under the crank, and under the smog pump, then back over the compressor.

Try putting it over every accessory but the alternator, then slide a crow bar between the compressor and the tensioner and lift it up so you have enough slack to slide it over the alternator pulley.

OK I went home and did what you said. I see what you mean by the smooth pulleys and those with the grooves. But when I routed the belt the way you suggested the belt was at least 8 inches to long. The way I see it, the belt has to go around the outside of all of the accessories and the main, under the tensioner, and at some point it has to go in around the water pump. But between what two accessory pullies does it do that. It seems to "fit" when I (starting at the tensioner) route it under the tensioner, over the alternator, under the power steering, in and over and around the water pump, out and under the main, around the air pump, and up and over the air conditioning. Can anyone verify that this is correct, or incorrect.

Starting at the alternator...down to the ps pump...over to the crank...around and up between the crank and the water pump...around the water pump counterclockwise...down to the air pump clockwise up to the A/C compressor...under the tensioner and back to the alternator.

There is no substitution for cubic inches!

OK one more time. I put the belt on per that diagram and it is about 3 to 4 inches to long. The only way it fits is as I decribed above. Did Pontiac give me the wrong belt size, I guess that is a possibility, or are there different routings for different model years and engine sizes, tpi,
tbi and carbed engines.
