HELP alt getting hot along with wire

Hey everyone this is my prob so i get up today and goto leave and my cars dead so i jump it with my moms van and dont think to much of it. When i got home like 10 min latur i smelt melting plastic so i poped the hood and the hot wire that goes from the alt to the batterie was melting in to the top of the batterie, thats how hot it was and my alt was very hot enough were u couldnt put ur hand on it. The quage is reading 14-15 volts charging so it dosent seem like there was anything wrong from inside the car, can you guys help i dotn know if the dead batterie thing has to do with it or not, i dont know what is wrong the alt is new so

But im going to stop driving it till i get a reply cause i dont want to mess up something else ,or catch on fire.

HaHahaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

Mine caught fire the other day, melted the battery post and the alt was red hot. Check your ground wire.

Good to know I am not the first it has happened to
