I've heard of a lot of people removing the smog pump from their engines. I've never done this myself, but it is supposed to free up some space in the compartment. Here's a link to the smog pump removal tech article:

I pulled all my smog stuff out and passed emmisions perfectly. I also took out my air too. Looks really nice.
Getting the A/C out of there makes it look much cleaner, and gives you easy access to the drivers side of the engine. Does it (A/C) work? If not its just extra weight and a condenser blocking the radiator. I could see reasons to keep the smog pump if you need to pass emmisions, but if not, that will open up all the room on the pass. side.
good luck

wanna make it look better????
what color is your car????
mines red..heres one thing i did that everyone seems to love....
take the plate on top of the throttle body off...get a can of high temp spray paint to match your cars color....spray the plate down, let it sit a couple minutes, add another coat, let sit,add another coat and repeat those steps for about 5 coats....then take a new razor blade and scrape the paint off the raised lettering(tuned port injection)...
wet sand it if the paint "orange peels",then add about 3 coats of high temp clear coat...
then, take a piece of cardboard(thin preferably) and stick i nthe 6 torx bolts used to hold down the plate, get some aluminum spray paint, and spray the bolts down...go for about 2 coats of it......
let it all dry,and slap it back on...guaranteed to brighten up your engine bay......feel free to meail me for pix of mine, ill try to post some soon.....
other thigns you can do is make sure your coolant overflow is clean on the inside,it shows alot....if its not,you can soak it in some kind of detergent..ammonia,bleach,cuper cleanmsimple green, and wash it out....it will make a nice difference....
other things you can do are polishing(fully or partially) your plenum and runners....
as far as that goes...get a decent polish doen on the plenum, and wet sand the hell out of y0our runners..the runners will clean up nice, and the plenum will look great polished...my plenum is partially polished,i havent had a chance to finish..and when im done,i plan on painting the grooves red to match the TB plate....
also, for shows what you can do is take out the intake hosing, and spray the outside of it down with "Black Magic Tire Wet"
it looks great, also wipe all vinyl+plastic pieces down with a rag soaked in Tire Wet..
makes a great difference....
hope this helps..
