How much better are 1986 IROC 305TPI heads then my stock 1992 LO3 heads?
BC,
Do you have a casting number from your LO3 heads?

86 TPI heads are 416 casting. I forget the casting # of TBI heads. TBI uses the "swirl-port" design, which puts a giant blockage in the intake path to promote re-mixing of the air and fuel, since, like in a carb motor, the fuel has a tendency to separate out from the air at low velocites. This of course makes them inferior for anything that requires unobstructed flow, but promotes better low-end torque with the lean mixtures required for emissions compliance.
The 86 heads aren't particularly good, but they are one of the better 305 heads. However they have perimeter-bolt valve covers and early-style intake bolt holes, unlike TBI engines.

Are you sure that 86 heads have center bolt valve covers? I thoght that 87 and later had them and the 86s had perimeter bolt pattern
I have a set of 305 TPI heads I was going to put on my L03...but I decided to forget it and put on Torquers when I have a little more cash. It'll push me close to 300 HP without the juice on, that's for sure. I am gonna sell these 305 TPI heads.
