CTS sensor same as IAT sensor???

I went to my local parts store the other day and asked the guy for an IAT for my new motor. He pulled a box that said CTS and said that was the right part. I haven't had a time to look at the old one, but does anyone know if this is correct?? It just sounds funny to me.

Not even close. The IAT, aslo known as the MAT, goes in your intake hose/air filter box. The Coolant Temp. Sensor goes in your Intake Manifold. Both serve very different functions. What does the sensor look like? Does it have a brass cylinder-type thing on the end? Or is the tip of the sensor plastic?

Funny that should come up, the two I have on my car are interchangeable. Same sensor.

There is an IAT that has a different part number, but the only difference is the sensing element is exposed on that one. The resistances of both sensors are the same, and on most cars the sensor is the same part.

So then I would be ok running that one for sure?? I don't want to have to take my Super Ram off again once it's installed.

I've always used the same Delco part # for both on mine. Hope this helps.

Huh, that's the one i have. The tip is plastic and you can see the little resistor inside. My CTS is just solid copper or brass. Guess i learned somethin new......

Max is correct. The best GM MAT for TPI cars is the one used in the LT1s. It is designed for air and is much quicker reacting. That is why TPIS's relocation kit uses the later MAT.

Relocating the MAT is raises its own issues. For SD you must alter the eprom to or it ruins the calibration (GM didn't design the eprom for these cars with a relocated MAT).

For MAF it seems to be handled different depending on the type of MAF system you have. On $6E, it only seems to affect the EGR. It does not seem to have any effect on the fuel/spark (However, if you get into "Source Code", then you make it do anything). But, this is another level again.

On GN's, it does seem to affect timing but not fuel (without altering the Source Code).
