Have you tried jumpstarting it? If it doesnt start when you try to jumpstart it, it could be a bad starter. You didn't change anything and it just died right?

If it just died it is not the starter. If I had to gues I would say it is the ignition switch.

I'd be checking over the fusable links. You lost power (voltage) for some reason.

Have you checked all the fuses as well?

There's several fusable links, some are high enough to see from opening the hood, I think there might be one off near the starter, there should also be a fuse coming off near the battery.

Manual is invaluble for this stuff to spot'em. I'll look through my Helms, IIRC it has them listed for my '89, should be pretty much the same for your '87

Don't bother messing with VATS, thats not your problem. That only prevents the car from starting, its not going to turn the car off once the car is running. Your problem is elsewhere.

AHve you checked the obvious, like the battery terminals being clean and tight?

Take things one step at a time. There is no reason to suspect the coil or distributor at this point if you don't even have power to the instrument panel. Start by checking your fuses and fusible links. Keep it simple, don't start changing everything but the brake pads trying to get the car started.

help

allright heres the latest, charged the battery, and it tries to turn the motor over, when we put the screwdriver on the starter, so its not the starter, starting to think it might be the ignition switch, casuse when we turn the key, on the ON postion it does not turn on the dash lights and the needles dont move, so guess will try that, or could it be something to do with the key in the chip?

The gm ignition hasn't changed much, yet the current load has doubled, I protect the ignition switch, and wiring with relays like they did the fans, headlights, fuel pump..etc.
