When engine warms up from a cold start the gauge seems to work fine. When the engine is restarted while still hot, the needle stays near the bottom of the gauge and never returns to anywhere near std. operating temperature. I was told to replace the sending and unit and I did that. No improvement. Any ideas? Thanks.

Z,

Does the temperature gauge indicate full-scale when the engine is cranked? If not, the instrument itself may be failing.

Yes, it bounces to the end of the dial when cranking the engine. It doesn't hit the top and settle down, it bounces, but stays at the top till I release the key and it goes back to the on position.

Are you sure you replaced the correct sensor? You should have replaced the one inbetween cylinders #1 & 3.

Yes. It was a pain to get to between the interference from the spark plug heat shields and the air tubes to the exhaust manifold.
