Engine started ticking out off nowhere?
(Man) what the hell is wrong with my carbed 305.This mourning on the way to school my engine was runnin fine,but on the way home it starts ticking out of NOWHERE! I wasn't drivin hard at all, and i never beat it,why is it ticking? is this serious, and can it be fixed easily,or is the motor now junk.

Do you have headers? Could be an exhaust leak. Is it more of a tapping? What have you done to the car recently? How often does it happen? You should turn it on and pinpoint where it is coming from. A ticking sound doesn't normally mean your engine is dying.
I dont have headers,it could be a leak but would it be make that sound? but it seems it is comin from the back of the right valve cover ( if u were standing in front of car)i havent did any mods to the motor,cant really notice it at idle. But when u drive it u can hear it pretty good (it goes with the rpm's).I havent loss any power,I guess u can describe it as a tap sound,just happen out of nowhere,didn't hear no signs of this this commin.

Sounds like a loose rocker, the tapping should get louder as rpms increase. Take the valve cover off and check to see whats going on, hopefully thats all it is. If thats the problem post again and make sure to only tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turns past zero lash.
I have the same thing. Does yours do it after you drive it for a while, and it doesn't warm up all the way? Mine is just a light tapping too, it happens every once in a while, I don't think it is that much of a problem.

It taps when its cold and hot (when given gas)not at idle though has to reach about 2500 rpm's before u can hear it.Its not the carb the carb makes that at little clicking sound at idle i think thats normal though.

The ticking you hear in the E4ME carb is a good thing. It's the mixture control solenoid operating, which means the TPS, CTS, and O2 sensor are operating as well.
The ticking you hear may be a valve train component or an exhaust leak. It can be hard to differentiate between the two by sound, but an exhaust leak is typically louder under a heavy load and can almost disappear when coasting, regardless of engine and road speed. A valve train component will vary directly with engine RPM, regardless of engine load.
Since you didn't mention that the noise is worse or different on accelleration, I'm guessing a valve train problem. If the noise DOES vary based on engine load, check the exhaust manifolds and gaskets, oxygen sensor (since it's in the same general area), and the 'Y' pipe flanges.
If the noise is not exhaust related, it could be as little as a loose rocker or pulling rocker stud, or it could be a bent pushrod, bent valve, broken valve spring, etc. It is also possible that you have a lifter that is collapsing, and that is generally from engine varnish and sludge accumulation in the lifter bodies. You can remove the lifters and clean or replace them, or try changing oil to a fully synthetic to help clean the engine. If you decide to change the oil, remove the old oil filter first, drain the oil from it, then reinstall it. Top off the oil level with a quart of automatic transmission fluid, then start and warm the engine without heavily loading it. The transmission fluid is an oil, but also contains a lot of detergents to clean and suspend particles. You may be able to clean a lot of garbage out of you engine that way. After fifteen to twenty minutes of running the engine at various speeds with the transmission oil in, drain the oil and install a new filter and oil as usual. After some miles on the synthetic, the engine should be getting cleaner.
If at any time the noise gets worse, you really need to remove the rocker cover and investigate the valve train for mechanical damage.

This may sound simple, but, have you checked your oil level? Has your oil been changed recently?

It COULD be just a sludged up lifter. I had a loud tick in my V8 305 Caprice and it was a lifter. I added some Marvel Mystery oil to the crancase, which cleaned out the lifter sludge and the noise went away. But I had the tick at idle and at all speeds.

than normal. Right now I am thinkin its just a exhaust leak because u can only hear the tap/tick under a load starting at around 2000 rpms, my oil level is good.
