Its before the valves and even a little in the intake manifold. Note' This a non-egr engine.

I dont have a ridiculus cam, but I did buy a cheap timing set and didnt degree it.

I wonder if the engine was running excessively rich and the fuel puddled, and everytime the engine heat soaked baked the fuel....??? Just thinking to myself

Oil leaking past the intake valve guide/seal. Seen it many times. It'll also coat the back of the intake valve with crusty carbon. You would think it couldn't get very far BACKWARDS up the intake runners but it does- not quite to the intake manifold.

Carbon deposit or oil as Damon said?

The fuel/air charge actually comes back up the intake port then back down into the cylinder. It doesn't just go right in....that is why it is so far up the runners.
