help sick car
i have a 84 305 carb. engine and when i start it after its been sitting all night it tends to putter when the rpms hit about 2500. im not sure what it is but its really annoying and another thing when i go to get on it it doesnt seem like the carb is opening fully it kinda bogs out for a couple of secs then it starts to pull. if you could give me some clues on what it might be i would greatly appreciate it.
IP,
First, I trust you are allowing the engine to warm up for a couple of minutes at least before hitting 2,500 RPM after a cold start.
Your cold operation and stumbling starts are signs of a lean condition. Make sure the fuel filter is clean, the float level is correct, and the accellerator pump is functioning. You should also clean the choke mechanism and make sure it is operating correctly.

ok i worded that wrong. ok ill let my car warm up a lil bit and when i go to drive of it starts to act like it wants to die. when i give it the slightest amount of gas it stalls then i let off and it kicks back on. the whole part about hitting twenty five hundred rpm's thats when im sitting i was messing around trying to see if it did it when i was in neutral and reved up to that and it puttered. it was almost like it back fired. my car is running rich not lean. havent changed the cat, and i know nothing about adjusting carbuerators. oh yeah one more question does anyone happen to know where i can find a proprtional valve. i have rear drum brakes.

sounds to me like the fuel filter is clogged...my 86 t/a did that exact same thing when the filter was clogged. if not that then maybe the cat is clogged. filter is cheap enough, though, and only takes a few minutes to change.
