Code 34 and confused

ok..here's the deal. i have an '87 iroc 5.0 liter, automatic, all stock. a couple of months ago i was driving on the highway and my service engine soon light comes on. i pull over, turn the engine off, then turn it back on. the light is gone and i don't think anything esle about it.

about a month later i have trouble starting the engine up and finally get it going and the light is back on. the engine is running very rough and the indle is fluctuating a lot. i kept running it because i had no clue what was wrong with it. finally it gave and wouldn't stay started. i checked the code and it came up as a code 33. i didn't really want to replace my MAF sensor because those aren't cheap. i replaced the starter and battery. yep..still not running. i was messing with some of the wiring to the MAF sensor and i got it cranked. i turned it off and tried cranking it again, and it was running like crap again. i was messing with it all day and finally got it cranked again..this time the light didn't come on or anything...it was running like a champ. i ran it around the block a few times and it was fine. that same day i was leaving to go somewhere and it acted up again when i cranked her. now i'm stumpped. i messed the the spark plugs and wires, and went to crank it and it didn't do anything...not even try to crank. the next day i checked the starter to see if there were any loose wires, and there weren't. i tried to crank it and now it tries to crank but won't actually crank. it's now showing a code 34 and i don't know what to do now. please help.

I would start by cleaning the MAF relays and the MAF connection itself, if it won't start, replace the relays. If that doesn't work, unplug the MAF and see if it starts and runs better. If so, the MAF is bad. You can get a remanufactured one for $135 bucks, which is probably only a little more than you spent on a starter and battery.
