Ok, this sprouted from the post about not being to pass emmissions...

https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/013357.html

Is it true that if you pour a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank that it'll clean things out? Or is this just another old wives tale? I'd really like to know...

If it's true, what size bottle are we talking about? the $.69 bottle or the more expensive big one?

Thanks for the time, and if this is just a junk joke, don't flame me for it, I'm learning...

Make sure to ask if you do it before emissions, or when you are going.. It could temporarily worsen your emissions if it is the same kind of thing as those additives.

shouldn't hurt too bad. I mean, its not corrosive, and as long as you get the bottle thats NOT diluted in water (haha) it probably wouldnt hurt anything. Just go buy a carb/FI cleaner at the gas station for a dollar.

If you read the labels of all those emission cure bottles they contain alcohol, this is just a cheaper way of going about it. I'm not saying that this will gaurantee you to pass, but it has lowered my readings in the past, and also don't just drive straight to emissions, drive around for atleast 20 mins.

Good call Vader. Around here, everything above 87 octane is 10 percent alcohol(keeps the farmers happy since its derived from corn). It's actually nice because it 90 octane costs the same as 87. The 90(with 10 percent alcohol), lets me run a little bit more timing. I also have to jet it a little bit fatter to compensate for the alcohol. It a 16 gallon tank, you would need 1.6 gallons of alcohol to make it 10 percent.
Alcohol can be harmful on the fuel system(attacks rubber stuff). More than 10 percent could cause problems.

The alcohol sold in stores for $.69 is 70%isopropyl alcohol and 30% water. I don't think it is the same as methyl alcohol... but I've been known to be wrong once or twice before.

I've read several articles in auto magazines that say octane booster is good for a noticable decrease in emissions. I don't have tailpipe sniffing in my area yet... but it's coming as soon as the county next to mine fails to meet standards again.
