lalve train noise!!! normal??

i have a rebuilt 355 tpi in my truck 92 fullsize, motor has comp cams 1.52 roller tip rockers, bigger cam 487-495 lift, and stock l-98 iron heads, i have a lot of tickin noise crommin from the top of the motor cant tell if its injectors "24lbs" or valve train, sure thinkin its valve train, should there be noise from them? granted i dont have carpet and my insides are gutted but i can hear the tickin from inside the truck drivin down the road!! also have another question, with the 1.52s and a .495 lift on stock cast heads could the push in studs have pulled out a lil bit and through off the adjusment? how bad is it to readjust them, ive never had to do it befor!! thanks

if you have it adjusted correctly there should be no noise. my guess would be exhaust leaks then injectors.

If you think it's the injectors just place one finger on the body of the injector...you can feel it pulsing....if the pulsing matches the ticking then you know the source.

My bet is valve train noise....what brand cam is it? What is the preload set too?

The studs won't pull out unless there is a defect in how they were pressed in or you are running a WAY radical cam in it.

I'd be leaning towards rocker adjustment. How does that cam sound in a 355? I got the 264 also

Doesn't surprise me that it is a comp cam....all the ones I have run have always been noisy no matter how you adjust them.

I don't know why, but I have run 4 comp cams on three different motors in the past 6-7 years and I have had noise issues with all of them. Granted it's not that bad, but still annoying. They all did the same thing, ie. ticked when coming back down to an idle or ticked at idle when the oil is hot. I adjusted preload on those puppies numberous times, tried everything from 1/4 turn to 1 full turn. 3/4 seemed to work best.

i think the cam sounds good in the motor, im runnin a 40 flomasters 3"in dual 2.25 out small i know i had the exhaust done with the truck was still a 4.3v6, i would like to go bigger tho. so when i adjust them do i have to have the motor runnin, valves off and then loosin them a bit then titen them back down? im not positive on how to do it!!

I hope my 1.52 comp roller tips and 264hr aren't noisy. I just set the cold adjustment on my 355, but I haven't fired up the motor so I will have to adjust them again. I'm running 10.5:1 cr with pro topline vortecs and 6" rods, how does the idle sound with that cam? is it pretty snappy when you rev it with the 110lsa? the normal routine is back off on the rocker arm nut until the rocker starts tapping, then tighten until it stops, then a 1/4 turn more. it will get messy with valve cover off, and you might get burned, a stethoscope will probably make it a little easier to hear the rocker chattering and set zero lash

My CC XE-274 was as quiet as a stock cam upstairs. Exhaust noise rocked though.

the motor i have has been nothin but a mess i got it off ebay "big mistake" the motor was rebuilt and had 0 miles on it, he said, and within 400 miles the motor ate its self, main bearning, so i had it rebuilt about 3500 ago and now i hear the same deep knocking noise and it picks up with throttle, its a lot more quite then befor but still there, i have two month left on warentie so i need to take it in soon!! befor the 2nt rebuild i had the cam thats one step smaller then what i have now 208-212 258-264 478-485 or somthin like that, i like the sound of this one i have now goin through a 40 flowmaster, but i want bigger, with all i have in the motor ive been to the track once and granted it was with no posi and stock 3.42s i only could run 16.00 at 83, way to slow, now i have 3.73 and a posi and i just started loggin data from a laptop so soon i will tune and burn proms, im hopin to get to high 14s but i dont think it will happin without a good set of heads!
