Plug change on 1991 Trans Am
Plug change on 1991 Trans Am
I am a shade tree mechanic at best and was wondering if somebody can give me some tips on how to get the plugs out of my 1991 5.7 trans am. If somebody who has a similar car can tell me what size socket and procedures to remove them (i.e. from top or bottom of car) that would be great. Also, should I do this when the engine is hot or cold and should you put antiseize on the threads ? Like I said I am amateaur at best but feel I can replace spark plugs.
Thanks for your time.......

On my 91 GTA (prior to installing the headers) w/AC, I had to get at ALL plugs (except #1) from under the car.
It used a standard spark plug socket in any socket set, but I also had to use a variety of extenstions. Some none, some 3" and a couple I had to use 3/8 to 1/2" adapter plugged into a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter to make the extension only 1 1/2".
Believe it or not, I found headers actually made it easier to get at. With my Edelbrock TES, I can get at all the driver's side and #2 on the passenger side from topside. Only # 4, 6 and 8 need to be gotten at from underneath.
With headers, I took a spare spark plug socket and ground about 3/8" off the top. Then I use a "ratchetting box-end" on the end of the ground off spark plug socket to access the plugs. The tip of the plug pokes through the end.

I would recommend making sure the engine is cool, unless you have protective gloves that will cover most of your arm. An engine block can seriously get hot. I've tried removing the plugs after running the car and letting it cool for awhile, not sure how long but at least 1/2 hr. and the block still burned my hands a little.

I changed two of my plugs today to see if I could do it. The first two on the drivers side, easy, but all the rest look like they are gonna be tough. But I have an Camaro, so I dunno if its any different. I hear headers make it easier to get to them. I dunno.
