Lack of acceleration

My stupid car is dying or something. It has been screwing up ever since I got it, and my attempts to fix it just make everything worse. Just in the past few days it started really running bad. It stalled for the first time on Tuesday. When it's cold, any throttle application at all makes it go crazy. I pull on to the road and floor it and it gets completely silent, no combustion whatsoever. Then after about 2 seconds of that it comes back to life in a floored state. After it get's warmed up and I'm going the speed limit, if given half throttle it just burbles and tries to decide whether to accelerate or decelerate for about a second. I'm thinking it has to be the carb or some sort of fuel system problem.

check your fuel pressure at WOT. your pump may be on its way out, either that or your fuel filter could be clogged. it may be alot simpler to fix than you think. just replace some of the obvious cheap stuff first like oxygen sensor, fuel filter, air filter, coolant temp sensor and see what happens.
