stupid ac/heater switch doesnt work

stupid ac/heater switch doesnt work
you know the top *** that controls the direction your ac or heat flows through the vents? no matter where i move that ***, the air always flows out the top defroster vents only. how can i fix this? its somewhat annoying

Defrost is the default position when there is little or no vacuum for the HVAC system. Trace the vacuum lines that run to it, and check for cracks, tears, or unconnected lines.
Usually, the vacuum lines run from the vacuum reserve canister (round device under the the car below the charcoal canister), up the driver's side fender, across the firewall, to a 3-way vacuum check valve near the distributor, then down and through the firewall, and ending somewhere under the dash for the HVAC doors.

ahh thats why.. thanks. i had removed them vacuum lines a long while back. forgot thats what they are for.
